Browsing and naming concepts

The OPC UA standard allows browsing based on a hierarchical model. The address space exposed by OPC UA to a client consists of several top-level nodes such as Objects, Types, and Views.

The PI OPC UA Server exposes a hierarchy that shows the structure of the available Data Archive (DA) and Asset Framework (AF) servers. These are grouped under the top-level Objects node. PI AF servers are displayed under a child node named AF Servers, and PI Data Archive servers are displayed under a child node named DA Servers.

This is a typical hierarchy illustrating the hierarchical relationship under Objects:

Naming taxony

The hierarchy for an AF Server includes the Databases, Elements, and Attributes of the accessible AF Server. The hierarchy for a DA Server includes two different views on the available PI Points:

  • all PI Points in the server

  • groups PI Points under their associated Point sources
